Give Us The Truth! Part 3 Does Food Affect Your Face?

By Kristin Patten

In continuing my ongoing series about the truth of how what goes into your
body shows up on your skin, I’m going to focus on the last two elements that
are important when you want to create and maintain, youthful looking and
healthy skin. These are antioxidants and water.

According to Joseph Jorizzo, MD , Professor
and Former and Founding Chair of the Dermatology
Department at Wake forest University,
“Your skin can be a window to your underlying
health. Many underlying health conditions,
some very serious, first appear as skin problems.”
What you “feed” your body really cannot
be underestimated when it comes to skin
health. Since toxins quickly break down the
health of your skin, antioxidants play a critical
role and it’s important that you understand
what they do and which ones you should incorporate
into your lifestyle.
Antioxidants are molecules that can inhibit
the oxidation of other molecules and over oxidation
or what is known as “oxidation stress”,
is what causes cells to break down and atrophy,
and that causes the aging process. Antioxidants
break the oxidation chains that cause
damage by removing free radicals and inhibiting
other oxidation reactions. In other words,
they keep the bad stuff out!
Ellagic Acid is one of the most important antioxidants
for skin. Researchers at Hallym University
in the Republic of Korea significantly
prevented collagen damage and inflammation,
a major cause of wrinkles, with topical applications
of ellagic acid. Ellagic acid in naturally
found in numerous fruits, vegetables and nuts,
especially raspberries, strawberries, cranberries
and pomegranates.
Lutein in another powerful and important
antioxidant. In fact, research from the Harvard
Medical School, found that consumption of lutein
protects the skin against some of the damaging
effects of the sun. Said Salvador Gonzalez,
MD, Ph.D and leader of the research team,
“Lutein has been widely recognized for its eye
health benefits for several years. But, our data
is the first of its kind to suggest that lutein
may have the potential to act as a preventative
agent against UVB-induced skin cancer. In addition,
these data suggest that lutein protects
the skin against damage caused by exposure
to UVB light, further validating our position
that lutein is a critical component to overall
skin health.” You can find lutein naturally in
dark green, leafy vegetables, such as spinach
and kale.
Although there are a variety of antioxidants
that I would recommend, just incorporating ellagic
acid and lutein into your daily regimen is
a great way to start.
Finally, the consumption of water must be
addressed. Water affects everything our bodies
do and drinking pure, clean water is arguably
one of the single best things you can do
to maintain great physical health and glowing
skin! According to F. Batmanghelidj, M.D., “Every
function inside the body is regulated by
and depends on water. Water must be available
to carry vital elements, oxygen, hormones
and chemical messengers to all parts of the
body. Without sufficient water to wet all parts
equally, some more remote parts of the body
will not receive the vital elements that water
supplies. Water is also needed to carry toxic
waste away from the cells.” Drinking good water,
and plenty of it, is a must so if you aren’t
already doing this, start now!
I really recommend that you get supplements
on a regular basis and from a raw, whole
food source. At Nourishe, we carry a great line
of vitamins at from Innate Response
because they are a leader in the
raw food sourcing, low temperature
drying, rapid nutrient delivery and
have exceptional potency
assurance.
Taking care of
yourself on the inside
is every bit as important as topical and
external treatments. If you want to look and
feel great, and if you want great skin that lasts
a lifetime, really pay attention to how you are
treating all of your organs; the skin being the
biggest organ of all!
