According
to Samantha Heller, MS, RD, a
clinical
nutritionist at NYU Medical Center in
New
York City, “Everything you eat becomes a
part
of not only your inner being but the outer
fabric
of your body as well. The healthier the
foods
are that you consume, the better your
skin
will look.” There are a variety of food and
supplements
that we consume and this month
I’m
going to talk about three of them: fats, vitamins
and
minerals.
Essential
Fatty Acids (EFAs) are my favorite
subject
and everyone should make sure they
include
EFAs in their diet if they want young,
beautiful
skin. Fats are a building block of skin,
and
EFAs are full of nutrients that are crucial to
the
production of the skin’s natural oil barrier.
Without
an adequate supply of EFAs, the skin
produces
a harsh, irritating form of sebum, or
oil,
which can result in serious problems. If
you
lack EFAs, your skin will be dry, prone to
inflammation
and frequently effected by white
heads
and black heads. Good sources of EFAs
are
found in cold water fish including salmon,
sardines
and mackerel. Flaxseed, flax, safflower
oils,
evening primrose oil, high vitamin butter
oil
and cod liver oil are also good sources.
Omega-6
and Omega-3 can be good but those
aren’t
really my favorites. For more information
on
EFAs, come visit me at Nourishe.
Another
important component of beautiful
and
healthy skin is vitamins. Taking the right
vitamins
and the right amount of vitamins can
do
wonders for your skin. The Journal of Investigative
Dermatology
reported in February
2005
that people who consistently take vitamins
C
and E see a reduction of factors linked
to
DNA damage in skin cells, leading researchers
to
conclude that antioxidant vitamins help
protect
against DNA damage. Vitamin C is
found
is broccoli, citrus fruits, cauliflower and
leafy
greens.
Vitamin
E is another great source and according
to
Karen E. Burke, MD, “Supplementation
with
natural Vitamin E in 400 mg per
day
has been noted to reduce photo damage,
wrinkles
and improve skin texture.” Vitamin
E
is found in nuts, seeds, oils, spinach, olives
and
asparagus.
So
you’re consuming your essential
fats
and getting your vitamins.
What
else do you need for
great
looking skin? Well, you need
minerals!
Two of my favorite minerals
are
Selenium and Zinc. In studies
of
The Journal of the American Medical
Association
in 1996, researchers showed
that
skin cancer patients who
ingested
two hundred micrograms
of
selenium per
day
had fewer malignancies,
reduced
risk of death from skin cancer and
a
decrease in overall mortality…and that part is
no
joke!
I
really love Zinc and I’m actually working in
the
lab right now with some great new topical
Zinc
therapies for acne. In fact, sometimes acne
itself
is a symptom of a Zinc deficiency. Taken
internally
or used topically, Zinc works to clear
skin
by balancing oil production and is effective
in
controlling the formation of acne lesions or
helps
those already on your skin to clear sooner.
Food
sources of Zinc include oysters, lean
meat
and poultry.
I
put this quote in last month’s article but it’s
so
good, I’m going to repeat it. Georgiana Dinadio,
PhD,
MD, MC’s, and Program Director of the
National
Institute of Whole Health in Boston
says,
“Your skin is the fingerprint of what is going
on
inside your body, and all skin conditions
from
acne to psoriasis to aging, are the manifestations
of
your body’s internal needs including
its
nutritional needs.” For the best looking and
healthiest
skin, you need to take care of the inside
and
not just the outside.
Join
me next month as I tackle the topics of
water
and antioxidants and in the meantime,
do
your skin a favor and eat well!
