Product Highlight Of The Week!

Nourishe's product of the week is our Sun Love and Sunshield (description is below). These products are definitely unique to the skincare/sun protection world. They are made with flowers and plants that are nourished by the sun/only bloom in sunlight. We cover up our skin to protect it from the sun, but there are nutrients and benefits that the sun can give us. These products work to teach your skin how to use the good parts of the sun while blocking out the bad. The Sun Love in particular can be used even when not in the sun (especially for those who have damage like hyper-pigmentation), as it helps the skin know how to utilize the sun in beneficial ways.

We encourage people to come to our Thursday events (the third Thursday of every month) for free education, live demonstrations of treatments, and answers to all of your questions. If you are unable to make one of our events, call us or stop by and we will be more than willing to answer any questions about our unique skincare line.

Description:
Instead of hiding from the sun, let yourself gain from it. Your skin can be in harmony with the sun and reap the benefits of its rays without the damaging effects. Sun Love and Sun Shield utilize sacred plants, herbs, and botanicals that bloom and thrive in sunlight, that are actually nourished by the sun. In a whole new concept in sun protection, these serums give your skin the nutrients it needs to accumulate a natural protection from dangerous UV radiation, avoiding unwanted reactions to sun exposure, while creating a balance that allows your skin to heal from the sun. Sun Shield, the stronger of the two, contains non-micronized zinc and should be used when in intense sunlight. Sun Love is perfect for everyday sun protection.

Ingredients:

Red Raspberry Seed Oil – Natural SPF of 30-50, with a high proportion of alfa and gamma tocopherols, it treats eczema and psoriasis. Studies show that it absorbs UVB and UVC ranges, which proves its benefit as a broad spectrum UV protector.

Wheat Germ Oil – Natural SPF of 20, with high levels of vitamin E, A, D, B1, B2, B3, B6, F, essential fatty acids, proteins and minerals, as well as high antioxidant and regenerative properties

Carrot Seed Oil - Breaks up accumulated toxins and removes wrinkles (Natural SPF of about 30)

Helichrysum - Nicknamed “Immortal,” it was given to kings and queens to drink, as it holds the power to make anything it touches more beautiful.

Lotus Leaf - Brings prosperity and allows your inner being to bloom. It also teaches the skin to absorb positive benefits from sunlight rather than negative responses to radiation.

Uncoated Non-Micronized Zinc (only in Sun Shield) – Mineral that works from the surface of the skin scattering and absorbing UVA and UVB rays. It is considered the safest and most effective chemical-free sun protection available. Non-micronized refers to the size of the atom, which is larger and safer so that it does not absorb into the blood stream.

Rosehip Seed Oil - Treats UV damage from overexposure to the sun and hyper-pigmentation

Avocado Oil - A natural, plant-based sun protector that is rich in amino acids, vitamins A, B1, B2, D, and E, as well as essential fatty acids

Pomegranate Seed Oil - High in flavonoids and punicic acid and a powerful antioxidant that promotes healthy skin cell generation

Sea Buckthorn Oil - Exceptionally rich in essential fatty acids, carotenes, tocopherols, and phytosterols

We hope to see you at Nourishe Yourself Thursday!

Give Us The Truth! Part 2- Does Food Affect Your Face?

 By Kristin Patten

According to Samantha Heller, MS, RD, a
clinical nutritionist at NYU Medical Center in
New York City, “Everything you eat becomes a
part of not only your inner being but the outer
fabric of your body as well. The healthier the
foods are that you consume, the better your
skin will look.” There are a variety of food and
supplements that we consume and this month
I’m going to talk about three of them: fats, vitamins
and minerals.
Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are my favorite
subject and everyone should make sure they
include EFAs in their diet if they want young,
beautiful skin. Fats are a building block of skin,
and EFAs are full of nutrients that are crucial to
the production of the skin’s natural oil barrier.
Without an adequate supply of EFAs, the skin
produces a harsh, irritating form of sebum, or
oil, which can result in serious problems. If
you lack EFAs, your skin will be dry, prone to
inflammation and frequently effected by white
heads and black heads. Good sources of EFAs
are found in cold water fish including salmon,
sardines and mackerel. Flaxseed, flax, safflower
oils, evening primrose oil, high vitamin butter
oil and cod liver oil are also good sources.
Omega-6 and Omega-3 can be good but those
aren’t really my favorites. For more information
on EFAs, come visit me at Nourishe.
Another important component of beautiful
and healthy skin is vitamins. Taking the right
vitamins and the right amount of vitamins can
do wonders for your skin. The Journal of Investigative
Dermatology reported in February
2005 that people who consistently take vitamins
C and E see a reduction of factors linked
to DNA damage in skin cells, leading researchers
to conclude that antioxidant vitamins help
protect against DNA damage. Vitamin C is
found is broccoli, citrus fruits, cauliflower and
leafy greens.
Vitamin E is another great source and according
to Karen E. Burke, MD, “Supplementation
with natural Vitamin E in 400 mg per
day has been noted to reduce photo damage,
wrinkles and improve skin texture.” Vitamin
E is found in nuts, seeds, oils, spinach, olives
and asparagus.
So you’re consuming your essential
fats and getting your vitamins.
What else do you need for
great looking skin? Well, you need
minerals! Two of my favorite minerals
are Selenium and Zinc. In studies
of The Journal of the American Medical
Association in 1996, researchers showed
that skin cancer patients who
ingested two hundred micrograms
of selenium per
day had fewer malignancies,
reduced risk of death from skin cancer and
a decrease in overall mortality…and that part is
no joke!
I really love Zinc and I’m actually working in
the lab right now with some great new topical
Zinc therapies for acne. In fact, sometimes acne
itself is a symptom of a Zinc deficiency. Taken
internally or used topically, Zinc works to clear
skin by balancing oil production and is effective
in controlling the formation of acne lesions or
helps those already on your skin to clear sooner.
Food sources of Zinc include oysters, lean
meat and poultry.
I put this quote in last month’s article but it’s
so good, I’m going to repeat it. Georgiana Dinadio,
PhD, MD, MC’s, and Program Director of the
National Institute of Whole Health in Boston
says, “Your skin is the fingerprint of what is going
on inside your body, and all skin conditions
from acne to psoriasis to aging, are the manifestations
of your body’s internal needs including
its nutritional needs.” For the best looking and
healthiest skin, you need to take care of the inside
and not just the outside.
Join me next month as I tackle the topics of
water and antioxidants and in the meantime,
do your skin a favor and eat well!

When it Comes to Skin Care, Don’t Fake It

By Kristin Heather

Your skin absorbs, digests, stores, and
processes what you put on it, just as your
body does to what you put in it.

The chemicals in synthetic products may
not all permeate the skin, but a percentage
of them do and they are toxic! Skin is always
a reflection of the internal organs that are
working to detoxify the body. If your liver
and spleen are extremely healthy, you may
be able to use synthetic product on your face
without creating extra toxicity. But, why risk
it? Especially when what you put on your
skin can actually be nutritious and support
your internal healing processes.
Your skin is already exposed to many external
irritants, like UV radiation and pollution.
Lines, wrinkles, brown spots, and acne
are signs of toxicity in the body. Synthetic
products will only add to skin issues. Think
of all of the products you put on your skin
in one day. According to a study by Bionsen
(a UK-based natural deodorant company),
women put an average of 500 chemicals on
everyday. As a personal observation, women
tend to age faster than men and I think it’s because
they use more chemicals.
Some of the toxins in these chemicals do
not get processed, and toxins cannot be free
in the body; they need somewhere to go. Unfortunately,
they find a comfortable place in
your fat. Your skin is made up of three layers.
The fatty layer, called the subcutaneous
layer, is where these unwanted contaminants
store. The subcutaneous layer feeds the dermis,
where new skin cells generate. If your
fatty layer is feeding your dermal layer toxicity,
then it will show up in your new skin.
Using organic products will not only create
the environment for your skin to cleanse and
rejuvenate, but will also provide your skin
with a more balanced diet. Since skin products
can actually permeate the skin, using
those with nutrient-rich, detoxifying ingredients
will make a difference. You will notice
your skin is glowing and toned, with smaller
pores and a balance between oil and dryness.
Plant and botanical extracts are alive and
have the ability to work with your skin. The
skin is able to use what it needs and let go of
the rest. In contrast, synthetic products are
dead, contain dehydrating substances like
water and alcohol, and can actually leach nutrients
from your skin.
Choosing which organic products is important.
Even some natural products can
be deceiving and contain preservatives or
water. Formulating with herbs and plants is
not easy. Since herbs and plants come from
the earth, when they are harvested, how long
they travel to arrive to my lab, and how they
are treated in general can make a difference
in the amount needed in each formula. Herbs
and plants are natural and more sensitive to
a variety of conditions, much like our bodies,
which is why they combine to create products
that are bio-available and much more
effective than their synthetic counterparts.
Now that you are convinced, let’s talk
about the big switch. Changing from synthetic
to organic is a short, but important process.
When you start to use organic, there can be
a detoxification phase for some. Depending
on how much toxicity is being cleansed from
the subcutaneous layer, this detox can manifest
as dry or oily skin, rough skin that may
feel like it needs to be exfoliated, or even a
breakout (although rare). This short process
(approximately a week) is your skin’s way of
purging what it doesn’t want (Finally!) and
starting to live the life it deserves. The end result:

bright, healthy, balanced, beautiful skin.

Give Us The Truth! Part 3 Does Food Affect Your Face?

By Kristin Patten

In continuing my ongoing series about the truth of how what goes into your
body shows up on your skin, I’m going to focus on the last two elements that
are important when you want to create and maintain, youthful looking and
healthy skin. These are antioxidants and water.

According to Joseph Jorizzo, MD , Professor
and Former and Founding Chair of the Dermatology
Department at Wake forest University,
“Your skin can be a window to your underlying
health. Many underlying health conditions,
some very serious, first appear as skin problems.”
What you “feed” your body really cannot
be underestimated when it comes to skin
health. Since toxins quickly break down the
health of your skin, antioxidants play a critical
role and it’s important that you understand
what they do and which ones you should incorporate
into your lifestyle.
Antioxidants are molecules that can inhibit
the oxidation of other molecules and over oxidation
or what is known as “oxidation stress”,
is what causes cells to break down and atrophy,
and that causes the aging process. Antioxidants
break the oxidation chains that cause
damage by removing free radicals and inhibiting
other oxidation reactions. In other words,
they keep the bad stuff out!
Ellagic Acid is one of the most important antioxidants
for skin. Researchers at Hallym University
in the Republic of Korea significantly
prevented collagen damage and inflammation,
a major cause of wrinkles, with topical applications
of ellagic acid. Ellagic acid in naturally
found in numerous fruits, vegetables and nuts,
especially raspberries, strawberries, cranberries
and pomegranates.
Lutein in another powerful and important
antioxidant. In fact, research from the Harvard
Medical School, found that consumption of lutein
protects the skin against some of the damaging
effects of the sun. Said Salvador Gonzalez,
MD, Ph.D and leader of the research team,
“Lutein has been widely recognized for its eye
health benefits for several years. But, our data
is the first of its kind to suggest that lutein
may have the potential to act as a preventative
agent against UVB-induced skin cancer. In addition,
these data suggest that lutein protects
the skin against damage caused by exposure
to UVB light, further validating our position
that lutein is a critical component to overall
skin health.” You can find lutein naturally in
dark green, leafy vegetables, such as spinach
and kale.
Although there are a variety of antioxidants
that I would recommend, just incorporating ellagic
acid and lutein into your daily regimen is
a great way to start.
Finally, the consumption of water must be
addressed. Water affects everything our bodies
do and drinking pure, clean water is arguably
one of the single best things you can do
to maintain great physical health and glowing
skin! According to F. Batmanghelidj, M.D., “Every
function inside the body is regulated by
and depends on water. Water must be available
to carry vital elements, oxygen, hormones
and chemical messengers to all parts of the
body. Without sufficient water to wet all parts
equally, some more remote parts of the body
will not receive the vital elements that water
supplies. Water is also needed to carry toxic
waste away from the cells.” Drinking good water,
and plenty of it, is a must so if you aren’t
already doing this, start now!
I really recommend that you get supplements
on a regular basis and from a raw, whole
food source. At Nourishe, we carry a great line
of vitamins at from Innate Response
because they are a leader in the
raw food sourcing, low temperature
drying, rapid nutrient delivery and
have exceptional potency
assurance.
Taking care of
yourself on the inside
is every bit as important as topical and
external treatments. If you want to look and
feel great, and if you want great skin that lasts
a lifetime, really pay attention to how you are
treating all of your organs; the skin being the
biggest organ of all!

Is Your Cell Phone Giving You Wrinkles?

By Kristin Heather
Our cells face extreme natural and unnatural
pressures every day. Our bodies are
electric with constant electromagnetic waves
running through them to fuel the health of
blood vessels and tissue. According to www.
optimumesthetics.com, “Magnetic fields
cause or increase motion of ions and electrolytes
in the tissues and fluids of the body. This
movement stimulates chemical and electric
actions in the tissues of the body, helping
them to rebalance or heal themselves where
necessary.” The electricity works to bring nutrients
easily into cells and move wastes easily
out of cells.
Cell balance and repair are dependent on
the state of our natural electricity. Nutritional
imbalances, lack of oxygen, and contact with
chemicals can affect electrical circuitry. Cells
are also constantly exposed to higher electromagnetic
frequencies. Electro-smog is
the dangerous cloud of radiation caused by
cell phones, wireless Internet, microwaves,
smart meters, etc. that can throw off cells’
power to balance and repair.
If cells are not healing efficiently, it can
lead to a number of health issues, such as
premature aging. Aging happens when our
cells’ ability to repair themselves declines,
and currently we are aging in a faster, more
extreme way due to external irritants, poor
nutrition from bad food habits and depleted
soil, highly toxic ingredients in our supplements,
toxins in everyday products like deodorant
and toothpaste, electro-smog, and
several other sources.
We witness aging all over our body, but
we tend to really notice it on our skin. When
your skin is sagging where it didn’t before or
wrinkled where it once was plump, it is guiding
you to the source of the problem, which
exists on the cellular level. It is bringing attention
to internal toxicity that is affecting
your cells’ working properly. Unfortunately,
to address outward signs of aging we spend
money and time solely focusing on topical
products and procedures that may seem to
help, but do not truly address the source of
the problem.
To give our cells support, we must look
beyond topical treatments to internally detoxifying
and healing. PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic
Field Therapy) is a non-invasive
and relaxing treatment that is widely used in
Europe to treat a plethora of health issues as
it penetrates into the cellular level, balances
cells’ electricity, and enhances the body’s ability
to function. The therapy uses a lower frequency
than the man-made high frequencies
that throw us off, and increases circulation
and cell metabolism so that the entire
body, all of its organs and systems can
repair and work to their best potential.
Since PEMF stimulates the body’s
natural healing systems, it can effectively
be used to address any health
problem: broken bones, chronic pain,
headaches, digestive issues, and menstrual
symptoms to name some. Essentially,
everyone can benefit from PEMF as
we live in a toxic environment surrounded
by an invisible cloud of electro-smog.
I have found PEMF very effective when
used as a compliment to other topical treatments
for unwanted signs of aging, specifically
because it enhances the detoxification
process, which is essential when healing
any skin issues. PEMF works
throughout the body to benefit all
of the major organs and to focus
on repairing the severe damage
caused by man-made electromagnetic
frequencies. The
result of PEMF treatments is better internal
health. And, as you know, when your internal
health improves, your skin reaps the benefits.

Drain Your Face… (Sounds scary, but it’s so relaxing.)

By Kristin Patten

Is there fluid stuck in your face?
Counter-act sagging and dull skin with
the coolest and most relaxing skin care
and anti-aging techniques that help to
remove fluid trapped in the face.

From skin cancer to acne to
jowls and sagging, the lymphatic
system works in cooperation with
other body systems to perform
important functions that could
be imbalanced and causing your
skin concerns.
L.D.F.R. (lymphatic drainage
facial rejuvenation) is a soothing
and relaxing way to heal your
skin and look younger. L.D.F.R.
is gentle, rhythmical massage of
the facial lymphatic sites based
on the natural structures and the
flow of lymph. The lymphatic
system is responsible for destroying
pathogens and moving waste
out of the skin cells. Immune
support is crucial for healthy
looking skin. Also, waste and
bacterial imbalance cause acne
and skin eruptions. Excess fluid
from medication, harsh products,
surgery, travel, injury, and
even sun exposure can collect
inside the cells, tissues, and
spaces in between and become
trapped. The lymphatic system
removes excess fluid, dead blood
cells, waste, cancer cells, toxins,
pathogens, and debris before
these materials attack our cells.
The lymphatic system aids the
circulatory system in delivering
nutrients and oxygen from the
blood to our skin cells. When
the lymphatic system is unable to
drain properly it becomes stagnant.
Nutrition and oxygen won’t
be available to the cells and in its
place bacteria will begin to affect
the tissue.
Regular lymphatic drainage
detoxing can benefit everyone
looking to keep their skin
healthy. If you are just starting
to take care of your skin this is a
great addition to a facial, combotreatment,
oxy-infusion, or DNA
repair treatment. Definitely have
L.D.F.R. if you:
• Travel
• Have acne
• Have puffy eyes in the morning
• Suffer from sinus issues
• Have sagging skin that seems
to have recently appeared
• Have gotten too much sun
recently
• Can’t seem to find the right
moisturizer for your skin type
• Have dull skin
• Are going to have or have just
had facial surgery or laser
• Have had dental work

The Truth About Supplements

By Kristin Patten

The broccoli on your plate comes from depleted soil; the
banana in your smoothie comes from a different continent;
and the orange that you’re eating is genetically modified.

Eating in a rush, not chewing enough, taking
pharmaceuticals, air pollution, preservatives,
additives, pesticides (should I go on?):
all of these factors disguise food in a nutrient-
rich costume. We eat thinking that we
are nourishing, but too much of our food and
lifestyle makes us nutrient deficient.
The reasons listed above put us in a “perpetual
state of nutritional depletion,” says
nutritional counselor Noelle Quero. Most
people’s digestion is working at around 50
percent, which means the body is not absorbing
or utilizing nutrients properly. And,
the many processed foods, pesticides, and
chemicals in our lifestyle put our bodies in
defense mode: we use so much of our energy
just to get rid of toxicity. Getting the necessary
nutrients from our food today is “like
sucking water from a stone.”
So, let’s all take supplements to balance
our diet and receive all the nutrients we
need, right? Well, if we are not processing
foods properly or digesting optimally,
then how are we going to magically
process a supplement? The answer:
we are not. It is crucial to first heal
the digestive system before adding
in supplements. You can do this by
detoxifying (I like to cleanse seasonally),
as well as by being critical about
the origin of your food. Nourishe offers
free classes and information about how to
cleanse your digestive system.
Once you are cleansed, you may still be
nutrient deficient (remember all of those
factors listed before?). At this point, supplements
can be helpful. But wait! Don’t stop
reading and run to Whole Foods. Supplements,
like food, come in many forms: some
healing, but some useless or even harmful.
The best way to find the highest
quality supplements is to become educated
about labels, recognize the disguises, and
know the sources.
Today “95 percent of all supplements…
have been synthesized by humans in pharmaceutical
laboratories to somewhat resemble
or mimic a function of their natural counterparts,”
writes naturopathic physician,
and Nourishe consultant, Dr. Frank Charles.
These man-made vitamins do not contain
what we think. For example, when you purchase
synthetic Vitamin C, you are actually
buying ascorbic acid, which is only one part
of the Vitamin C found naturally in food. For
short-term use, taking a synthetic Vitamin
C supplement may be beneficial. Yet, “the
downside of excessive ascorbic acid intake
includes collagen disease, rebound scurvy,
kidney stones and diabetes mellitus.” Taking
synthetic supplements can lead to a build up
of toxicity and health problems.
But, don’t give up! There are a few select
companies that create whole-food based,
natural-as-they-come supplements (Find
them at Nourishe) that provide a steady
and genuine increase in health. Whole-food
supplements are made from vitamins and
minerals that come from whole food concentrates,
which are grown in a controlled environment.
They are also easily recognizable,
as the label will show specific ingredients
like “Vitamin C…Oranges,” and “Folate…Broccoli,”
establishing the origin of the vitamin or
mineral. There won’t be two-part names like
“calcium citrate” and “ascorbic acid,” which
are prime tellers of synthetics.
We live in a world of nutrient deficiencies.
It is important to heal your digestive system
so that you can process foods and supplements
optimally and gain the nutrients that
you need. Like the food industry, the supplement
industry is dressing our vitamins and
minerals in disguise. The good news:
there are whole-food, bio-available
supplements that use nature as their
design, and help you become nutrient
sufficient and healthy, without
the confusing costume.

Leaky Gut Can Affect Your Skin

By Kristin Patten

What do wrinkles, acne,
psoriasis, eczema, and dull
skin all have in common?

Your gut! Yes, the whole digestive track,
from your mouth to your colon, is the primary
cause of many common skin disorders.
Leaky gut, a relatively new condition
mainly recognized in the alternative world,
has been leading researchers to discover
new underlying causes for the conditions in
skin that cause vitiligo, tinea versicolor, psoriasis,
eczema, rashes, acne, and even aging
such as lines and wrinkles.
So, what is a leaky gut, you may ask. It is a
not so fancy name for intestinal permeability.
Intestinal permeability is a condition occurring
when the walls of the intestine become
thin and therefore cannot effectively
filter. The intestine needs to allow small particles
of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids
to pass into the bloodstream. This is how
you absorb the nutrients your body needs
to function. However, with intestinal permeability,
waste particles, food particles, proteins,
allergens, and toxic materials formed
by bacteria escape and make their way into
the bloodstream.
As these particles circulate through the
body three very serious side effects occur.
First, inflammation happens, which can
immediately flare rashes, and psoriasis.
Second, the immune system becomes completely
compromised, which means it starts
attacking your own body. Having a compromised
immune system is overall a huge
concern for health, but primarily for skin
issues, it is known to cause psoriasis and
vitiligo. Third, elimination of toxins, which
is critical for your body, gets interrupted.
If the intestinal tract isn’t performing this
function, then the skin is the next organ of
elimination. Many of the acne patients that
I see have significant improvement, sometimes
within days, just from supporting the
gut health. Their acne and scars disappear!
Some estimates say that close to 20%
of you are walking, or should I say leaking
around with intestinal permeability. Medications
such as antibiotics, ibuprofen, aspirin,
and antacids can cause leaky gut. So
can caffeine, stress, additives in processed
foods, and food allergies. You
can probably raise your hand
to at least one of the above.
Another cause in my opinion
are the very controversial
grains. Some scientists and doctors are
starting to report that grains should not
be part of our diet at all. We also are now
beginning to realize that most grains aren’t
digested because they aren’t treated properly
before eating. Most grains are treated
with over 30 chemicals, making your sandwich
a highly processed food. Eating highly
processed food is a direct cause of leaky gut.
So, how do you know if your leaking is
causing your skin problems? Well, some of
the other effects include memory loss, fatigue,
joint inflammation, digestive issues,
abdominal pain, bloating, brain/emotional
disorders, and much more. If you have been
dealing with any of these symptoms and
have a skin condition, look at healing your
gut. The GAPS, or Gut And Psychology Syndrome
diet is a good starting place for information.
The first place I like to start with my
patients is healing the gut. My favorite way
to do this is with bone broths. Yup, bone
broths! No fancy, expensive medication or
treatment plan, just simple, traditional food.
Bone broth or meat stock is rich in gelatin
and amino acids that not only heal, but actually
strengthen connective tissue of the gut.
Gelatin is also great for building collagen.
Every line and wrinkle you have is a result
of loss of collagen, so here is a great way to
reverse them. If you need help with recipes

Nourishe, I’ll be more than happy to bring

with helping her avoid Botox, and looking
healthy and young. For the next 9 tips on

Are You Scrubbing Off Your Face?

By Kristin Patten

The necessity and benefits of exfoliation are promoted everywhere, from television
commercials, to magazine ads to promotional pieces for particular products.
Scrubs, fruit acids, enzymes, acids and mechanical scrub brushes are extremely
popular and sell very well. We all want to have skin that’s in great condition and
according to most sources, regular exfoliating is one way to get it. But is that the truth?

What is the truth about exfoliation?
Isn’t it kind of our skin’s job
to know when it’s time to slough off
dead cells? Our skin is comprised
of multiple layers, including the
epidermis and the dermis, which
work together to ensure we have
healthy skin. The epidermis is the
outer layer that is waterproof and
protective, while the dermis is the
middle layer that provides strength
and elasticity. The epidermis is only
going to slough off the “old” skin
when the dermis is ready to replace
it. So, if our skin isn’t sloughing
appropriately, we may need to look
more deeply into why this isn’t
happening. Our deeper tissue and
DNA are the control center for skin
function and that includes what
happens to the epidermis.
The epidermis, as the protective
barrier, is part of the complete function
of our skin and it’s important
that the epidermis is strong, whole,
and healthy so that we are protected
from environmental factors, such as
UV radiation and toxins. If you are
destroying the epidermis through
over exfoliation, the normal every
day cell functions must stop what
they are supposed to be doing
and instead, focus unnecessary
energy on repairing the
epidermis. Since healthy
skin starts at the cellular
level, wouldn’t you rather
your cells spend that
time and energy on
anti-aging functions
for the deeper tissue?
At the surface level,
over exfoliating can also
make your pores appear
larger because the body’s
repair mechanisms will
produce extra oil to act as a
fill-in barrier. Being an overly
enthusiastic exfoliator can
cause skin challenges both on the
outside (epidermis) as well as on
the inside (dermis).
So, if you are feeling like you
need some extra exfoliation what
should you do? Most of the time,
you should take a look at the
products that you are using and
make sure that you aren’t creating
inflammation or irritation because
the ingredients aren’t right for your
skin type. Irritation and inflammation
will make your body go into a
cellular frenzy, as your cells attempt
to correct these problems, and this
makes you age faster. A good facial
(with an instrument, not squeezing)
can also help to remove any blocked
pores so that you can absorb good
products into the proper layer and
eliminate any waste. The sloughing
off of dead skin cells so that the skin
can absorb products is often a main
reason people want to exfoliate,
so a proper facial will take care of
this. Oxy-Infusion can help as well
because when properly infused, the
reaction of the oxygen in the dermal
and subcutaneous tissue allows the
entire cellular function to work
faster, and this prevents DNA damage.
The most important thing you
can do for your skin, however, is
just to have a good understanding
of how the skin functions on a cellular
level. Learning about your
skin and how it really functions will
enable you to make healthier decisions
for your skin. We are more
than happy to do a complimentary
consultation that will teach you
about your individual skin and help
you understand healthy skin care
and true anti-aging.
One thing that is universal is
that we all want to delay the aging
process as much as possible and
healthy skin always looks more
youthful. Inappropriate exfoliation
can actually cause the aging process
to accelerate by allowing more
external factors to gain access to
your DNA because your deeper cell
functions will work to rebuild the
epidermis. When you have healthy
skin on the inside, the outside will
take care of itself.

Let Your Skin Shine Without the Shiny

Let Your Skin Shine
Without the Shiny

By Kristin Heather

Everyone wants to shine, but nobody wants
shiny skin. So, we blot; we exfoliate; we avoid
products with oil. It makes sense, right?
Well, what if I told you that it is the opposite
of what your skin needs, especially
when you look and feel greasy? What if
I told you that using oil-based products
counter intuitively allows your skin to balance
and lose that shiny look? I am here to
offer a new perspective on oils and your
skin, which is why all organic products are
full of natural oils.
Your skin needs movement in both directions,
in and out, to be healthy, clean, and
protected. It needs to get waste out and
bring nutrients in. Do you know what system
in your skin works to move in and out?
The oil system! Stimulating and balancing
the natural oil flow creates hydration and
detoxification. Oils get waste, dead cells,
and any type of microbes that have been
stuck in the skin out, while they work as
carriers for nutrients to absorb in.Oil is
critical in creating motion and is absolutely
crucial in having forever-young-looking
skin. Oil works to heal acne and helps avoid
wrinkles. Oil is amazing for your skin! Finally,
I said it!
So, why all of the oil free talk? In attempting
to heal skin, some believe that breaking
down the epidermis (the outer layer of the
skin), thinning and drying it out, will yield
more balanced skin. “If you have acne or
oily skin, stay away from products with
oil!” People get trapped in this mentality.
They get trapped in a cycle that dehydrates
and irritates their skin.
Exfoliation is another issue. Scrubbing,
polishing, and peels run rampant in the
skincare world. If you can shed the epidermis,
then new and beautiful skin will surely
take its place, right? In my opinion, if your
skin is not shedding naturally and junk is
trapped in the pores, then there is a deeper
problem. It could be that
you are using the wrong
products, and it could
also be that you need
more oil in your skincare.
When you avoid applying
oil on your skin to
make it less shiny, your
skin reacts in the exact opposite
way than you had hoped.
It goes into panic mode and
starts to overproduce oil (sebum)
fast. But, this erratic oil is
sticky, looks greasy, and is more
prone to hold waste and debris,
which leads to more irritation,
blackheads, blemishes, fine lines,
and damaged skin.
Surprisingly, your skin actually
needs good oil to fight this bad
oil.Once you are giving your skin
enough hydration through oils, it will
balance and no longer need to create
the unwanted greasy substance. This concept
is why all organic productsare based
with healthy oils that nourish the skin.
They allow detoxification and act as carriers
for the other nutrients and healing
herbs in the products to penetrate the skin.
The overall result is a balance that protects
against acne, premature aging, and other
skin issues, but also tones and makes the
skin glow.
To stimulate skin repair that rids the skin
of bacteria and toxicity, and also allows the
skin to absorb healing ingredients, focusing
on the skin’s oil system is the place to start.
It may be counterintuitive, but treating the
skin with plant-based oils will create balance
and avoid overproduction of sluggish
sebum that manifests in irritation like acne
and blackheads. Your skin wants its oil…it
needs its oil.Get out of the oil free mentality!
Your skin, shining without the shiny,
will thank you.

Give Us The Truth! Does Food Affect Your Face?

Give Us The Truth!
Does Food Affect Your Face?
By Kristin Patten
► health & beauty ║ Anti-Aging
One of the first things people notice about
you is your skin. For this month’s article, I’ve
compiled information from significant sources
so you can get the truth. I believe everything
from past experiences, emotions, environment,
stress level, sleep, lifestyle, nutrition and more,
affect how your most visible organ, your skin,
looks. You may think all these factors can’t affect
your skin but think about what your skin
is. It’s an organ, made up of tissues, which are
made up of cells, and your cells are affected by
everything. Nutrition is significant because it
not only involves your intake and absorption
of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, co-enzymes,
etc. but all of these elements rely on each other
to function. For example, imbalances in co-enzymes
mean that certain enzymes can’t work
properly. Our body is an amazing machine
that works successfully when all of its parts
are healthy. And what fuels that machine?
Food! And once you finally understand the
beauty of fueling your body, think about all the
things you might put in your body. Processed
and chemical ingredients can’t be absorbed or
even worse, they attack you from the inside
out. Since the health of your skin dictates its
appearance, don’t you want to be certain that
you are “feeding” it properly? Although I’m a
skin care specialist, nutrition fuels every organ
we have, and that’s why I constantly and
consistently research how the body works. Research
proves that good nutrition will give you
great skin. At Nourishe, I incorporate numerous
therapies that focus on the internal function
of your health because I know that will
eventually show up on your skin. My success
in skin care has more to do with my study of
the body as a whole than anything I have ever
studied about the skin. But, what do I know?
Let’s talk to some experts.
According to Dr. Andrew Weil, Founder of
the Arizona Integrative Medicine and Health
Guru, “It’s not just what substances you put
on your skin. Inappropriate inflammation is
rooted in diet, how you handle stress, how
you rest and your exposure to environmental
toxins.” My passion for everyone to have great
skin can’t start and stop at the skin. As Dr. Weil
explains, all of your choices dictate the condition
of your skin. As a skin care specialist, I
would be remiss in my duties to not go over
some basic nutritional guidelines to ensure
clear, healthy and youthful looking skin for my
clients.
Georgiana Dinadio, PhD, MD, MCs, Prgoram
Director of the National Institute of Whole
Health in Boston has been quoted as saying,
“Your skin is the fingerprint of what is going
on inside your body, and all skin conditions
from acne to psoriasis to aging, are the
manifestations of your body’s internal
needs including its nutritional
needs”. Samantha Heller, MS, RD,
a clinical nutritionist at NYU
Medical Center in New York
City has stated, “Everything
you eat becomes a
part of not only your inner being, but the outer
fabric of your body as well. The healthier the
foods are that you consume, the better your
skin will look”. The reverse is true as well, Heller
tells us. The less attention we pay to what
goes in our mouth, the more problems we may
see with our skin. “You could have sallow skin,
dry skin, older-looking skin. It’s not going to
happen overnight, but starve your skin long
enough, and it’s going to show,” she says.
This is just an introduction to a fascinating
topic. Join us next month as we continue to
hear from experts and also see some examples
of vitamin, mineral, fat, and antioxidant deficiencies
and how they relate to very prevalent
skin concerns that may even affect you. You

Infuse your skin with oxygen for a radiant, healthy glow

We now have the ability to remove those
toxins by infusing oxygen and liquid nutrients
deep into the layers of the skin. The relaxing
and soothing procedure stimulates the
renewal process and produces an immediate
radiant, healthy glow.
Nourishe Oxy-Infusion is designed to
work with your own DNA to repair and rejuvenate
your skin naturally. During therapy,
a vital liquid oxygen is infused deep into
every layer of the skin along with absorptionenhancing
ingredients to promote renewal of
the core cellular infrastructure. The oxygen
cleanses the cells, removes toxins, stimulates
new cell growth and provides immunity from
further damage.
The therapy targets the three essential
phases of the
healing
process. First, it rejuvenates sluggish,
stressed skin by forcing out toxins caused
by pollutants, allergens, improper diet, and
solar damage. Next, it promotes healing by
increasing moisture content, energy and core
strength to make rejuvenation of the outer
layers more effective. Finally, it stimulates the
cells to regenerate and multiply by strengthening
some of the most important proteins in
the skin - collagen and elastin, which provide
the fundamental basis for the skin to maintain
its youthful appearance.
Nourishe Oxy-Infusion is also effective in
treating other skin concerns:
Acne - Since bacteria can’t grow in an oxygenated
environment, acne, toxins, and other
infections can be reduced and eliminated.
Pre and Post-Operative Care - Recent
clinical studies have found that people who
undergo facelifts, skin cancer removal procedures
or any other types of incisions can have
30 to 50 percent faster healing time with
increased oxygenation.
Sun damage - Although prevention
is the best treatment for
sun exposure, even with
the best protection, we
can’t avoid it entirely
and the damage compounds
over time.
Skin can be healed
with oxygenation
before the damage
sets in.
Travel - In just two hours of flying at a high
altitude the red cell metabolism is altered.
The same is true during dramatic climate and
temperature changes. Our extremities and
our skin are the first to be affected and can
be counteracted with oxygenation.
Nourishe Oxy-Infusion can be used on a
weekly basis to support your over-all goal of
healthy, youthful skin. It also will enhance
your beauty before a special event or photo
shoot as it draws blood, nutrition and oxygen
to the surface for an immediate rosy, dewy,
soft, radiant glow. And it promotes long
lasting healthy, beautiful skin when used in
conjunction with other treatments.

Infuse your skin with oxygen for a
radiant, healthy glow
By Kristin Patten
Did you know your skin has the ability to renew itself every 28 days? If
that’s the case, then why do we see the signs of lines, wrinkles, texture
breakdown and loss of tone as we age? Many factors contribute to
aging process but one of the most fundamental is a decreased supply of
oxygen due to the build-up of toxins in the cells, which results in dehydration.
